I forgot to tell you all about my little health scare and Dr. appointment at the U of I Children's Hospital. When I went to my 2 year check up I was still pretty low on the growth chart. I had made the charts for height but not for weight. My Dr. didn't really think there was anything to be concerned about but wanted to error on the safe side and decided to do a complete blood count just to make sure there was nothing he was missing. I was not a fan of the blood draw. AT ALL! I screamed and screamed and screamed. It was horrible.
When they called Mom with the results of that test my blood sugar was elevated so they wanted to run the tests again after I had been fasting. So, not only could I not eat I had to go get my blood drawn again! This time was worse because I am not dumb. As soon as we walked in that room I knew what was coming and was very worked up again. We survived. Barely.
They called the next day with the results and the nurse told mom there were a few numbers that were slightly off and they were referring me to a nephrologist at the U of I. Mom didn't even know what a nephrologist was but the nurse explained it was a kidney Dr. The counts that were off in my blood draw were dealing with kidney. Of course Mom was very worried. She gathered her questions and called back to talk to the nurse again. After the nurse took her questions, talked to my Dr. and called back Mom was feeling less worried but still of course, a little worried. The Dr. said he really didn't think there was anything serious going on with me but just wanted to cover our bases to make sure we weren't missing something.
In the weeks between my initial appointment with my Dr. and the follow up appointment with the nephrologist. Mom started keeping a detailed log of everything I ate and drank and approximately how many calories I was consuming. It didn't take her long to realize I wasn't eating or drinking nearly enough. I was only consuming about 500 calories and 8 ounces of liquid a day. After this realization she did a lot of research on how to add in more calories to my diet when it was obvious I wasn't going to eat more food. She started adding butter and oils to everything I ate. Giving more high fat, high calorie foods anywhere she could and added in pediasure shakes.
When my follow up appointment came at U of I it was a very long day. It started with an ultra sound of my kidneys which started out traumatic. I was so scared and crying hysterically when they tried to have my lay on this cold table with white paper. After a short time of my crying so hard and saying, "I want Daddy" Mom asked the radiologist if Daddy could lay down and hold me on his chest. He said we could try it so we did and I was much happier. Actually I was completely fine with it. I felt much safer on Daddy than I did by myself.
After the ultra sound we had a break and went to mall for some lunch. We had some extra time and after my traumatic morning Mom thought I should do something fun so they took me to Build A Bear. Dad thought I was too little to really enjoy it but I actually did enjoy it. I picked out my own animal, a bunny and got to work on it. We stuffed it, I gave a "bath" and it took me no time at all to pick out clothes for her. I went and grabbed a pair of jeans and a princess t shirt. Mom tried showing me other things and I said, "No, I want dis". I had my mind made up and I was satisfied. We got her dressed, and I decided very quickly to name her "Hop".

From there we went back for our next appointment for blood work and our appointment with the nephrologist. Mom and Dad also met with a nutritionist who had a bunch of questions for Mom, but because Mom had been keeping the food log for me she was able to give her much more information than the nutritionist expected. She was very impressed with everything Mom and Dad had been doing for me in terms of sneaking calories in and gave Mom a few more ideas. Before seeing any test results it was her feeling that there was really nothing wrong with me, which also eased Mom's mind.
Finally it was time to see the Dr. She had my blood results and checked me over. We got the fantastic news that my blood work was all perfectly fine. She felt the numbers were off before because I wasn't eating or drinking enough and the changes Mom and Dad had made corrected it. She said if there truly was a problem the counts would not have improved. Mom and Dad had a big sigh of relief as well as my extended family when they shared the good news with them.
I'm a tiny, healthy girl! Thank you GOD!
